🌻 Accessibility Guidelines and Design Patterns. All guidelines I’ve put together on LinkedIn — from ADHD and designing for children to cognitive load and aging population. Now updated, all in one single post, to celebrate Global Accessibility Awareness Day ↓ ✤ Accessibility and Inclusive Design ADHD: https://lnkd.in/dZtiH5pQ Aging Population: https://lnkd.in/d8DY_tFg Alzheimer: https://lnkd.in/evHj7jZ9 Autism: https://lnkd.in/ekujAteM Children: https://lnkd.in/eh3fv-US Cognitive Load: https://lnkd.in/eiVHhwjJ Colorblindness: https://lnkd.in/eqjvPgSZ Color contrast: https://lnkd.in/ecWS4ue7 Deafness: https://lnkd.in/epeRUMmc Dementia: https://lnkd.in/dccfi4Yu Design Systems: https://lnkd.in/dxU52JVJ Dyscalculia: https://lnkd.in/e8wyMWp4 Dyslexia: https://lnkd.in/ei9mncR7 Edge cases: https://lnkd.in/eeyrpp7m Legibility: https://lnkd.in/eEarXzD8 Left-Handed Users: https://lnkd.in/eWyzRdy5 LGBTQI: https://lnkd.in/eumCiYrk Mental Health: https://lnkd.in/d5ijbZrX Names: https://lnkd.in/dxmBRpJG Neurodiversity: https://lnkd.in/dcSiAP5g Neurodivergent: https://lnkd.in/eV-FRBHa Phone numbers: https://lnkd.in/duGdsrEx Screen readers: https://lnkd.in/eaviMFkf Stress: https://lnkd.in/ew_65Km4 Sustainability: https://lnkd.in/etGZbrk9 Target sizes: https://lnkd.in/ePuc3mbJ Teenagers: https://lnkd.in/et3XbUTJ Time zones: https://lnkd.in/dcH27neC Toolkits: https://lnkd.in/ekq2q7Zb Trauma: https://lnkd.in/eVfS-meA Voice: https://lnkd.in/e5KYCuse --- Accessible design doesn’t happen by accident. It requires deliberate, intentional efforts to design and build with accessibility, and to retain and evolve accessibility over time. Some companies understand the reasons why accessibility matters, but not necessarily how to prioritize accessibility work, nor how to integrate it into company’s existing ways of working. And still, many companies document accessibility “away” — with ad-hoc audits, “just enough” reporting to meet compliance requirements, or a mandatory WCAG AA checklist to tick off boxes at the very end of the design process. --- One strategy that has helped me over the years is to focus on making accessibility challenges more visible and relatable to people who never experienced them first-hand. Simply by showing how actual people use our products, where they struggle and what their challenges are. People often don’t respond to risks and regulations and compliance because they can’t relate to them. But once they see how people live and go about daily life and how the product fails them just when they need it the most, that’s where sometimes change happens. And: always involve people with temporary, permanent or situational disabilities into the design process. “Nothing about us without us”: you can't design *for* people without designing *with* them. And huge kudos to wonderful people contributing to a topic that is often forgotten, overlooked or documented away. 💚 #ux #accessibility | 16 comments on LinkedIn
